The Art of the Plane Date

Things have been kind of whirlwind since the last time you’ve heardfrom me. Not only have I skipped the country, I managed to have
several dates on my way out…you all know that Ludacris wrote ”Pimpin’ All Over The World” about me…right?

I’m currently enjoying an extended vacation in India, gallivanting around the motherland and breaking hearts (at least that’s what I’m
pretending to boost my ego)

So anyway, about the dates: I’m pretty sure that I’m the only personthat calls extended conversations with my seat makes during a flight a”plane date.” Now let me explain my reasoning: you’re basically with a person, getting to know them, and having a conversation about important things (umm, at least I do) the only difference is that even if you have a good “date” very rarely is there a second date. I started the first leg of my trip with a very attractive member of the US Military as my seat mate and we spent the whole flight talking and
grabbed a drink during my first layover. It was a brief but interesting date. I have to admit, if I was set up with him on a blind date type of scenario, I would have politely decline the second date. While he was very sweet, he was also very intense. Imagine taking a bite into a very rich, heavy, dark chocolate cake…some people love it and can handle it a slice, but there are others of us who can only take just a bite.

My second date was with (well, I think he was) a sheikh in Dubai. I was upgraded (thank you frequent flier miles!) and got to spend my
layover in the business class lounge. Now, not imbibing in free booze is akin to sinning in the religion of Maya Deewani. So here I am,
about 3 stiff drinks down and an older gentleman wearing the traditional keffiyeh comes up and sits across from me. He strikes up a
conversation with me and eventually the topic of what I do for a living comes up. WHen he finds out that I am currently in between
jobs, he quickly invites me to come live with him on his estate (and yes, I did seriously consider it for a second…don’t judge me!) I guess this doesn’t really count as a “plane date” per say, but I’m counting it because I was asked to move in with him (isn’t that something that should wait until AT LEAST the second date?).

So now for date number 3 (3rd time’s a charm!). I recently made the trip across the country from Mumbai to Kolkata to attend a family
friends wedding and I managed to land another “place date” on the 3 hour journey. So KD saved me from the uncle who was encroaching on my space (I was put in the middle seat..THE WORST) and we spent the flight perusing a magazine. I face, we made such a convincing couple that the flight attendant asked him if “his wife” wanted anything while I went to visit with my cousin at the other end of the plane. We then spent the rest of the ride trying to convince the people around us as well as the flight attendants that we had 3 children in boarding school in Kolkata. It was honestly one of the most interesting plane dates that I think I have ever had. My favorite thing about him was that he continued on my false stories without any hesistation or prompting on my part. We worked like a dream team! He struck me as a fun loving, jovial, fun loving kind of guy. We have a date set for later this week!

So have any of you wished your flight was longer so you could spend more time with you “plane date?”

  3. If women are expected to do the same work as men we must teach them the same things.
